Do Spinal Decompression Results Last?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for 9 years now. During this time we have helped thousands of patients with cervical and lumbar disc herniations, bulging discs, and related disorders, return to more normal lives.

Because we have treated so many cases over an extended period of time, we know that for the most part, spinal decompression results are long lasting.

Depending on the nature and severity of the individual neck or back pain patient’s condition when we started, their overall health and lifestyle, occupation, and initial treatment outcome, we may recommend ongoing maintenance care to improve the odds of the results lasting. Most decompression patients are happy to do this if it means the results will last longer, which they will.

The treatment frequency for maintenance care on the DRX9000 is anywhere from 2 times per month in the beginning to once every couple of months ongoing. In addition, there are exercises, stretches, home care, and nutritional recommendations to help patients maintain results.

Some patients choose to move into chiropractic, yoga, Pilates, or physical therapy for ongoing support. This is good, but none of these do what the spinal decompression machine can do. If you really want the decompression results to last you should probably continue with some sort of maintenance care. You can play around with the frequency until you find an interval that works best for you. Of course, we help you with this process.

For those that do not do maintenance, the results seem to hold up well…just not as good. So, to get the most out of your decompression, YES, we recommend some sort of maintenance plan, and we will make it affordable for you.

Spinal Decompression Soreness in the Beginning

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

It is not unusual for lumbar and cervical spinal decompression patients to get even more sore than they already are temporarily. It’s like that splinter in your finger that is really bugging you. The longer it’s there the deeper it gets into your finger and the harder it becomes to remove. Then, when you finally decide to dig it out it becomes even more sore…temporarily, before it starts feeling better.

There are all kinds of examples and analogies we can use to describe why some people get sore when they start a DRX9000 spinal decompression program. Heck…the treatment IS physical. Just like when you start a new exercise program…good chance you will get sore. Now the more out of shape you are the more potential for soreness.

Depending on where the starting point is with your back or neck pain when we start decompression you may be more prone to soreness in theĀ  beginning.

However…we know this and we try to minimize it by starting off very light and slowly increasing the pounds of force of the pull. We have you wear a back support all day, ice frequently, drink lots of water, take fish oil, eat lots of plant foods, and get plenty of rest. All these things help to reduce inflammation which is the primary source of pain.

As time goes on and you progress through the treatment the pain levels will subside. And usually the pain is not unbearable, it’s just uncomfortable. But like the old saying goes… “No Pain, No Gain”.

Believe me…it’s a small price to pay to reach our treatment objectives like most of our decompression patients do. It’s a process that thankfully usually has a happy ending šŸ™‚

Spinal Decompression: How long until I see results with the DRX9000?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 8 years now with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 treats low back pain and sciatica associated with bulging and herniated lumbar discs.

Prior to this we would refer out our herniated disc patients that did not respond to chiropractic or physical therapy to medical doctors for surgical consults.Ā  Some would have surgery, but most would just live with the pain.

But that was then and this is now.Ā  With the DRX9000 we are able to achieve favorable outcomes with a very high percentage of our patients. Sure, there are patients that do not respond but it is rare.

How soon a herniated disc patient starts to feel better from disc decompression treatment is dependent on many factors. Here are some of them:

  1. The nature and severity of the condition. Is it just one herniation or is it multilevel? Is there severe pain, inflammation and muscle guarding?
  2. The age of the patient.
  3. Are there complications such as a scoliosis, short leg, advanced spinal or disc degeneration, fibromyalgia?
  4. The activity level of the patient and primary occupation. It will typically take longer to heal if a patient is performing manual labor, driving for long periods, or sitting/standing all day with minimum breaks.
  5. Is the patient compliant with keeping regular appointments and staying on the treatment plan?
  6. Is the patient getting plenty of sleep and drinking lots of water?
  7. Is the patient under a lot of mental stress?
  8. Is the patient eating the right foods? We recommend eating lots of plant foods as they help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
  9. Everyone heals differently. We are all unique and respond to treatments in our unique way.

So, there you go. Some decompression patients begin to feel better right away and some take a while. Some may even feel more sore in the beginning. It’s just the way it is. The treatment is physical and involves repositioning injured spinal discs, strengthening spinal muscles and ligaments, and teaching the body to work with the spine and discs in a new position.

We recommend wearing a lumbar support as much as you can in between DRX visits and icing frequently throughout the day to reduce inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms.

It does not even matter so much how you feel in the beginning. What matters is how you feel at the end of the treatment. As long as you keep your appointments, do your home care, try to keep a positive attitude, drink lots of water, and eat right, you give yourself an excellent chance for becoming another nonsurgical spinal decompressionĀ  success story.
